We’re pleased to share our latest project completed for the Utah Health Workforce Advisory Council (HWAC), a comprehensive analysis of clinical preceptor availability for physicians and advanced practice registered nurses in Utah.
The HWAC identified clinical preceptor shortages as one of the most pressing issues threatening Utah’s ability to train new healthcare professionals. Without enough experienced clinicians to supervise students during hands-on training, Utah faces a bottleneck that could impact healthcare access for years to come.
Working with the HWAC and Utah Health Workforce Information Center, we analyzed new workforce data collected from licensed physicians and APRNs during license renewals. This first-of-its-kind dataset allowed us to map the current preceptor landscape and identify where shortages are most acute – particularly in primary care and rural communities.
Our team produced:
- A comprehensive report detailing findings and actionable recommendations
- A two-page executive summary for policymakers
- Supporting technical documentation
- Data visualizations illustrating the scope of the challenge
This work provides Utah with a roadmap for strengthening clinical training capacity and ensuring the state can meet its future healthcare workforce needs.
